Microsoft Teams now has end-to-end encryption support for one-to-one calls
End-to-end encryption (E2EE) functionality for Microsoft Teams is now available. Microsoft Teams is adding E2EE security support for all one-to-one talks, after introducing the functionality earlier this year and testing a public sample since October. Today, all Teams users will receive an upgrade that allows IT admins to enable and control E2EE for one-to-one calls
According to John Gruszczyk, a technical product manager at Microsoft, “several enterprise customers in the US and Europe spanning industries such as aerospace, manufacturing, telecommunications, and professional services are in the process of rolling out E2EE for Teams conversations.”
Microsoft Teams encrypts data in transit and at rest, allowing authorized services to decrypt material for the purposes of data retention records.

Microsoft also employs OneNote encryption for notes stored in Microsoft Teams, as well as SharePoint encryption for at-rest data. In Teams, all chat content is encrypted both in transit and at rest.
This new E2EE encryption will improve the security of one-to-one talks within Teams, but it will deactivate some Team functions if IT managers enable it. In one-to-one calls that use E2EE, recording, live captioning / transcription, call transfer, call park, call merging, and capabilities like transferring calls to another device or adding participants to create a group call will all be disabled.
